Proclamation of Intent

A haggard old farmer, shielding his weary, grey eyes from the mid-morning sun, guides his ambling clydesdale to the centre of the town's square.

"That'll do, Jake," says the farmer, patting his old friend on the ruff of his neck.

Perched atop his ancient wooden cart, the farmer, with slow and deliberate movements, begins to prepare his tobacco pipe as he surveys his surroundings. The square is crowded with the various tradesmen, barterers and riff-raff common to the weekend market. The smell of salted pork from the butcher mingles with the smoky fumes from the blacksmith's hut. The aroma of honest work.

Horse, man and cart remain the stoic centre of the ceaseless action around them. Nigh on half an hour passes.

From the west, a dapper young man strides toward the farmer's cart, wiping dust from his black sleeves and brow on his approach, a subtle glint of mischief in his face. He removes a cloth package from his trouser pocket and hands it to the farmer, who nods acknowledgement and returns his flinty gaze to the horizon.

Wasting no time, the young man skips on to the wagon's bed, raising his right arm to the sky. A thunder-crack echoes through the town, and all but the most uninterested patrons of the market are cowed by the tremendous eruption. With the summer heat hanging still over the now ironclad silence, the man standing atop the farmer's wagon addresses the crowd.

"I have made a blog," he says matter-of-factly. "Some of you may not agree with my decision and think me mad. Maybe I am a trifle. But this blog will not be. It will be a blog of quality. Look to the front of your sepulcher. I shall post my theses on its gilded doors soon enough."
